Athletics reportedly target former Astros GM James Click for opening

Are the A’s targeting James Click as their next head of baseball ops?

The Athletics appear to have identified a notable name to consider as they search for their next head of baseball operations.

According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, James Click has emerged as a serious candidate for the Athletics’ vacant general manager position.

The A’s parted ways with David Forst earlier this month, opening the door for a new voice to lead the organization as it prepares for its eventual move to Las Vegas.

James Click would bring plenty of experience to the job, including three seasons running the Houston Astros’ front office. He was hired as Houston’s general manager in 2020 and helped oversee one of the most successful stretches in franchise history.

During Click’s tenure, the Astros reached the ALCS in 2020, won the American League pennant in 2021, and captured the World Series in 2022. Despite winning a championship, Click and Houston parted ways shortly after the season when his contract expired.

Click reportedly turned down a one-year extension from Astros owner Jim Crane, amid tension between the two sides throughout the 2022 season.

The 48-year-old has remained in baseball since then, joining the Toronto Blue Jays in 2023 as vice president of baseball strategy. Click has continued to draw interest for top front-office positions, including interviews with the Colorado Rockies and interest from the Boston Red Sox.

His baseball background stretches even further back. Click spent 15 years with the Tampa Bay Rays after initially joining the organization as an intern in 2005. He eventually climbed the ranks to become Tampa Bay’s vice president of baseball operations before taking over in Houston.

The Athletics would present James Click with an interesting challenge. The organization has one more season in Sacramento at Sutter Health Park before its planned move to Las Vegas, where ownership has indicated it intends to increase payroll.

The A’s have already begun spending more, signing Luis Severino to a $67 million contract while also extending Brent Rooker, Lawrence Butler, Tyler Soderstrom and Jacob Wilson.

However, the increased spending has yet to translate into consistent success. After entering June 19 with a 38-38 record, the Athletics have fallen apart over the last two months. They enter the week at 53-84, leaving the next general manager with plenty of work to do.
