Brock Purdy Earns NFC Offensive Player of the Week Honors

Brock Purdy’s near-perfect performance against the Miami Dolphins has earned the San Francisco 49ers quarterback some well-deserved league-wide recognition.

Purdy was named the NFC Offensive Player of the Week on Wednesday following San Francisco’s comfortable 35-13 win over Miami in its home opener. It marks the third time in Purdy’s career that he has received the honor.

The 49ers quarterback completed 20 of his 22 passing attempts for 287 yards and two touchdowns, finishing with a 149.1 passer rating. Purdy also made an impact with his legs, rushing three times for 30 yards and another touchdown as San Francisco improved to 2-0.

His 90.9% completion rate was the second-highest mark of his career and the second-best in 49ers history among quarterbacks with at least 20 attempts. Purdy still owns the franchise record after completing 95.2% of his passes against the Arizona Cardinals during the 2023 season.

Sunday’s performance also put Purdy into the NFL record books as he became the first quarterback in league history to complete at least 90% of his passes while throwing for at least 285 yards and two touchdowns and adding a rushing score in the same game.

“He was real sharp. He was on point,” 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said of Purdy postgame. “Got the ball to all the right spots.”

Purdy’s latest award continues a growing list of individual recognition since he took over as San Francisco’s starting quarterback. It’s yet another example of him proving why he belongs in the conversation for one of the best at his position. Teammates and future Hall of Famers Christian McCaffrey, George Kittle, and Kyle Juszczyk said postgame that little Purdy still surprises them. Plenty of those around the team said this was the best camp they’ve seen from their starting quarterback as well.

Purdy joins Joe Montana and Steve Young as the only other 49ers quarterbacks to earn NFC Offensive Player of the Week honors at least three times. He’s still got a ways to go to catch those two franchise legends, as Young won the award 12 times, while Montana received it eight times.

Through two weeks, Purdy has helped guide San Francisco to wins over the Los Angeles Rams and Dolphins while the offense has continued to navigate wide reciever injuries. He’s no doubt deserving of the recognition, and more should come his way if he can continue leading San Francisco’s offense to more dynamic performances and, most importantly, wins.
