DeForest Buckner’s return gives the San Francisco 49ers a proven presence on the defensive line, but ESPN reporter Nick Wagoner believes the team could still make another move before the trade deadline.

Wagoner joined Sactown Sports’ The Matt & Kayla Show to discuss what Buckner adds, the costly mistakes in the loss to Atlanta and the questions surrounding kicker Eddie Piñeiro.

The 49ers have tried several ways to replace Buckner since trading him in 2020. Wagoner said the reunion addresses a need that remained even as San Francisco cycled through other options.

Buckner remains an excellent pass rusher, and his presence should ease the workload on younger linemen such as Grayson Halton and Sebastian Valdez.

“He’s still an excellent pass rusher,” Wagoner said. “And DeForest Buckner can do that.”

Buckner’s impact could extend beyond his own production. Wagoner noted that opposing teams have double-teamed both Buckner and defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa at a high rate, forcing offenses to choose where to direct protection.

The addition could free up other players and give defensive coordinator Raheem Morris more options along the front.

Wagoner said the 49ers could still pursue an edge rusher, and he would be surprised if the team made no further moves before the deadline. Wide receiver is also worth monitoring, though the return of injured players and the time needed to build chemistry with Brandin Cooks and Christian Kirk could affect the team’s plans.

The loss to Atlanta, meanwhile, was shaped by mistakes San Francisco could have avoided. Wagoner pointed to penalties and four turnovers, including costly giveaways deep in Atlanta territory.

“Anytime you go minus-four in turnovers, you’re almost certain to lose,” Wagoner said.

He said the mistakes, rather than a new blueprint for opponents, were the most concerning part of the defeat. The 49ers had chances to stay in control but gave away possessions and points.

Piñeiro’s kicking is another issue to watch. Wagoner said the team may not have an obvious replacement available, which is part of the reason to give the veteran a chance to work through the slump. But the missed extra points are becoming a concern, particularly with tougher weather and higher-stakes games ahead.

“I think the extra-point thing is a thing,” Wagoner said. He suggested the 49ers could soon bring in other kickers for a look, even if Piñeiro remains the starter for now.

With Buckner back and more players expected to return from injury, San Francisco has a chance to strengthen its roster during the bye.

Wagoner’s expectation is that the team will keep looking for help, especially on defense, as it tries to turn a costly loss into a more complete second half.
