There is no drama between Darius Acuff Jr. & Domantas Sabonis

Matt George calls the Darius Acuff Jr. and Domantas Sabonis rift rumor fabricated, citing their stats, fit and public comments amid an 0-6 start.

Matt George pushed back against claims that Domantas Sabonis is unhappy playing with Sacramento Kings rookie Darius Acuff Jr., calling the online report “fabricated” and “absolute nonsensical drama for clicks.”

On Sactown Sports’ The Matt George Podcast, George addressed a post claiming Sabonis was “not enthused about playing with a ball-dominant guard like Acuff.”

He said the claim didn’t make sense given Sabonis’s history with De’Aaron Fox, another ball-dominant guard.

“The best years of Domantas Sabonis’s career, he played with a ball-dominant point guard in De’Aaron Fox,” George said. “For a very long time, he and De’Aaron Fox played very well together.”

George also cited Sactown Sports’ Carmichael Dave, who said he had checked with multiple sources and found “absolutely zero truth” to the suggestion that Sabonis has an issue with Acuff. George argued that the on-court numbers also contradict the rumor.

Through six games, Sabonis was averaging 16 points, 15.8 rebounds and 7.3 assists while shooting 70.4% from the field. George said Sabonis had recorded 38 screen assists leading to 90 points, with the majority involving Acuff.

“Sabonis’s strengths are being emphasized by playing with a 19-year-old rookie,” George said. “What Sabonis and Acuff have done on the floor together is emphasizing Sabonis’s strengths.”

Darius Acuff Jr., the seventh pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, was averaging 26.3 points and 6.3 assists through six games. George recalled that after a 30-plus-point performance, Acuff praised Sabonis and said, “I need to be better. I need to take more advantage of how great he played.”

George acknowledged that the Kings’ 0–6 start and defensive struggles could be frustrating. Acuff might take an early shot instead of running the offense through Sabonis, he said, but that doesn’t prove a personal conflict.

Plus, George added that Darius Acuff had improved at playing through Sabonis and getting teammates involved.

Sabonis could have broader concerns about his future in Sacramento, George said, and might want to spend his prime years playing for a contender. But that doesn’t mean he is undermining Acuff.

“It doesn’t have to be malicious. It doesn’t have to be vindictive. It doesn’t have to be drama-filled,” George said.

His message to fans was to separate fact from speculation, especially when social-media accounts repeat an interpretation as news. “Don’t fall for drama bait reports,” he said. “It is not happening.”
