The San Francisco 49ers enter their bye week 6-1 and in first place in the NFC West. Matt Barrows of The Athletic says the break could give the defense a major boost: the potential return of Nick Bosa.

“We’ve been hearing about him coming back for a few weeks, and we still are,” Barrows told Sactown Sports’ Carmichael Dave and Jason Ross. “It’s become a ‘we’ll believe it when we see it’ type of situation.”

Nick Bosa’s return would give San Francisco another chance to adjust a defense that has spent much of the season finding ways to generate pressure without him.

Barrows pointed to the team’s use of “five-man fronts, switching things up, overloading one side of the defensive line” as ways the 49ers have compensated.

The question now is whether those changes still make sense with Nick Bosa potentially back and the recently re-acquired DeForest Buckner also joining the defensive front.

“Whether you need to do quite as much, whether you blitz less, whether you rush four guys more,” Barrows said, will be among the decisions facing the team.

The challenge, he added, is deciding whether to keep doing what worked in the first half or use the returning players to build on it.

That could matter after a stretch in which the defense struggled to pressure opposing quarterbacks. San Francisco recorded three pressures and no sacks against Atlanta, Barrows said, noting that quarterback Michael Penix Jr. got rid of the ball quickly.

The low pressure total stood out against a season in which the 49ers’ pass rush has been inconsistent.

Barrows also mentioned another possible boost: edge rusher Romello Height getting the cast off his hand. High had been playing with “one hand essentially for most of the season,” Barrows said, and is expected to be without the cast after the bye.

Still, Bosa’s status remains uncertain.

Barrows described his return as something the team had been anticipating, but did not confirm that he would play in the next game–Sunday at home against the Las Vegas Raiders.

The 49ers are expecting several players back, including wide receiver Mike Evans (Achilles), though their return could disrupt the “flow and the chemistry” built by the lineup that carried the team through the first part of the season.

For a 49ers team leading the NFC West, Nick Bosa’s potential return offers more than a familiar name on the field.

His availability could give the coaches new choices in how they rush the passer—and help determine whether San Francisco can sustain its strong start through the rest of the season.
