The Sacramento Kings are trading guard Nique Clifford to the Oklahoma City Thunder for two second-round picks, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported on Sunday morning.

The picks are Utah’s 2028 second-rounder and Minnesota’s 2030 second-rounder, according to a league source.

The deal ends Clifford’s year-plus tenure in Sacramento. The Kings selected him 24th overall in the 2025 NBA Draft after acquiring the pick from Oklahoma City, a move that followed days of rumors linking the two parties.

That original deal remains in place: Sacramento owes the Thunder a 2027 San Antonio Spurs first-round pick if it falls outside the top 16. If the pick lands in the top 16, the Kings keep it and send Oklahoma City their own 2027 second-round pick and Charlotte’s 2027 second-round pick instead.

More on Nique Clifford

Nique Clifford had a meaningful role during his rookie year last season, stepping into the lineup amid injuries to Keegan Murray and Zach LaVine.

The Colorado State product appeared in 75 games, started 28, and averaged 8.6 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 2.4 assists in 25.1 minutes per game.

His role diminished this season. Over eight games, Clifford played just 50 minutes, while the 1-8 Kings gave minutes to two-way players and others like rookie guard Emanuel Sharp and veteran guard Daeqwon Plowden instead.

The limited use under head coach Doug Christie was a puzzling turn for a young player who had been a regular contributor a year earlier, one who many believed was supposed to be a building block in general manager Scott Perry’s effort to build a new-look, younger, and multi-faceted roster.

With Clifford out of the picture, the door remains open for the likes of Sharp, Plowden, and two-way wing Leaky Black to get the bulk of second-unit minutes behind LaVine and Murray.

For Oklahoma City, the move brings back a player it drafted and adds a young guard to its roster, one that has been ravaged by injuries to key players such as Jalen Williams, Chet Holmgren, and Cason Wallace.

For Sacramento, the team opens a standard roster spot and gains financial flexibility.

Per Spotrac’s Keith Smith, the trade leaves the Kings about $6.4 million below the luxury tax, creates a trade exception of roughly $3.3 million for Nique Clifford, and leaves Sacramento with 13 players on standard contracts (two open roster spots).

The team has up to 14 days to add a 14th player.
