Sunday’s Game Will Be Finished On September 6 In Oakland

In the case of the Detroit Tigers, when it rains it pours.

Literally.

Looking to complete a four-game sweep in Detroit, the Oakland Athletics contest on Sunday against the Tigers was suspended due to rain in the bottom of the seventh inning with the A’s leading 5-3. The game will resume play on September 6 in Oakland followed by the first game of that series.

Oakland fell behind early on Sunday, but would go on to erase a 2-0 deficit after a three-run third inning paced by a go-ahead RBI single by Stephen Piscotty. After Detroit right fielder Nicholas Castellanos homered to tie things up at 3-3, Piscotty came through once more with a two-RBI double to give Oakland a 5-3 lead. Liam Hendricks had just entered the game to face the Tigers in the bottom of the seventh before the rain started to fall and the game went into a delay before being suspended.

Mike Fiers pitched six strong innings against his old team, giving up three runs and striking out three batters. Fiers will be in line for the win when play resumes on September 6 in Oakland.

Game 3: Saturday, May 19 – A’s 4, Tigers 1

Daniel Mengden pitched seven strong innings of one-run ball as the Athletics won their third straight game of the series 4-1. Jurickson Profar had a strong game at the plate as he went 3-for-3 with a double, while Nick Hundley and Chad Pinder added solo home runs.

Game 2: Friday, May 18 – A’s 7, Tigers 2

Oakland’s ace so far this season has without a doubt been Frankie Montas.

Montas nearly pitched a complete game on Friday as he pitched 8.2 innings and gave up two runs while striking out 10 batters. Montas lowered his ERA on the season to 2.67 after his incredible performance. Mark Canha and Chad Pinder hit home runs for the A’s as they won their second straight game of the series.

Game 1: Thursday, May 17 – A’s 17, Tigers 3

If Chris Bassitt was hoping for some run support on Thursday, he definitely got what he asked for.

The Athletics exploded for 17 runs on 16 hits as they pummeled the Tigers 17-3. Josh Phegley went 4-for-5 with a home run, while Jurickson Profar hit a grand slam to add to the onslaught. Mark Olson, Marcus Semien, and Mark Canha hit home runs as well, breaking the Athletics’ three game losing streak.
