Greg Papa, the radio voice of the 49ers, joined “The Carmichael Dave Show with Jason Ross” Friday to preview Sunday’s game against the Cardinals, where Brock Purdy ranks among the franchise’s best quarterbacks and more.
In Steve Young’s MVP year with San Francisco, he threw for 3,465 yards and 25 touchdowns on a passer rating of 107. Even though we’re in different eras, Purdy has already thrown for 3,553 yards and 25 touchdowns with a passer rating of 116.9. The team has had good quarterbacks since then, but is Purdy the best since the 49ers won the Super Bowls?
“Jeff Garcia had some really good years… and [Colin] Kaepernick had some good moments obviously, Alex [Smith] had some good moments, Jimmy [Garoppolo] had some good moments,” Papa said. “But I would say easily, Brock Purdy is the best one going back to Steve Young. I think if you got into it deeper, and looked at the first X amount of games in their careers, could you say Brock is even better than Steve?”
Additional topics discussed include:
- Final thoughts on the team’s win against the Seattle Seahawks
- How likely are either Brock Purdy or Christian McCaffrey to win the league MVP?
- Who are the biggest threats to Purdy’s MVP chances?
- What are the concerns when facing Kyler Murry and the Arizona Cardinals?
