Montas has been the ace of an Oakland team that has won nine of its last 10 games

The Oakland Athletics are the hottest team in baseball, and a big part of their recent nine-game winning streak was starting pitching.

Right-hander Frankie Montas has been Oakland’s staff ace thus far, earning American League Player of the Week Award honors for his performance from August 3rd-August 9th.

Montas is the first Athletics player to win the award since outfielder Mark Canha was tapped for the honor in August of 2019.

Last week, Montas went 2-0 with a 0.64 ERA while striking out 14 batters last week in wins over the Seattle Mariners and Houston Astros.

The 27 year-old is 2-1 on the season with a 1.57 ERA, 22 strikeouts and a 1.00 WHIP (Walks and Hits per Inning Pitched).

After an up-and-down 2019 campaign that saw the right-hander begin the season with a 9-2 record and a 2.70 ERA before being suspended 80-games for performance enhancing drugs, Montas looks like he doesn’t need any extra help in becoming one of the better pitchers in the league.

Oakland’s nine-game winning streak was snapped on Monday night in Los Angeles, but with a 4.5 game lead over the Astros in a 60-game shortened season, the skies are the limit for Montas and the Athletics in 2020.

Montas will likely take the mound next on Friday night when the A’s face their Bay Area rival San Francisco Giants at Oracle Park.
