Hondo Carpenter, Sports Illustrated beat writer covering the Las Vegas Raiders, joined Whitey & Watkins Tuesday to talk about running back Josh Jacobs not getting a new deal, where the Raiders stand with their star player and how the rest of the team looks heading in to 2023 training camp.
All that & more on Whitey & Watkins.
“The Raiders are not like they used to be,” Carpenter said on the show Tuesday. “They’re now led by Dave Ziegler, who is financially responsible. They’re not going to go out and pay people just because they’re popular. They would rather see a guy leave a year early, than stay a year late. So they wanted him, they were willing to make an offer to him. In fact, they made their last offer late Friday, early Saturday. And it was a couple of different options, but it wasn’t what Josh was looking for…His best year came in a contract year. Well, at a position that already has a very short NFL shelf life, you can’t afford to give a long-term deal, especially to a guy whose best season was in his contract year. It had danger written all over it for the Raiders and I think that they were prudent, I think they did the right thing.”
Additional topics discussed include:

- How close was Josh to signing a new deal Monday?
- What kind of contract was Jacobs looking for?
- Could Josh hold out this season?
