Over the weekend, news broke that new Las Vegas Raiders’ quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo officially passed his physical, making him available to participate in the team’s training camp.

While speaking to the media Tuesday, coach Josh McDaniels was asked how Garoppolo was able to make a connection with his teammates while he was sidelined this offseason. Knowing the quarterback from their time together in New England, McDaniels explained Jimmy Garoppolo spends a lot of time and effort with non-football related conversations.

“It’s how much you put into it, how much you care about where they came from, what their family situation is like, where they’re at in their life or their career,” McDaniels said. “I think that’s important for anybody that’s trying to create relationships and especially at the position of quarterback in the NFL, where you want to be a leader on your football team, you have to be an elite communicator on the field. So, to be able to try to do that and establish those kinds of relationships is important.”

After spending the past six years with San Francisco, McDaniels said it’s been a fun process re-teaching Garoppolo his system. The coach added they hope to replicate the success Jimmy G had with the 49ers in Las Vegas.

“We’re excited about the things that he does well. I know he’s eager to try to improve on some things that maybe he didn’t feel he was ready to do at a high level, and we’ll try to address those and identify those as we go. But he’s generally given his football team an opportunity to win. And I think the most important thing, the most important number for me at that position – it’s really the only one I care about – is does he get wins on the board, and generally he has done that.”
