NBA expert explains the Kings salary cap if Malik Monk leaves Sacramento
Apr 25, 2024, 4:04 PM
NBA salary cap wizard Keith Smith, a contributor to Spotrac, joined “The Drive Guys” to talk about the Sacramento Kings offseason, what the team will and will not be able to do if Malik Monk leaves, and more.
Monk will enter unrestricted free agency on June 30th, and the Kings will be able to offer the guard a deal that tops out at $78 million over four years. If Monk gets a larger offer and leaves Sacramento, Smith explains that the Kings won’t have a lot of salary cap space to work with
“Unfortunately, that’s where the challenge is. They’re probably still going to be a cap-out team because he’s not carrying a very big number that’s coming off the books. You’ve still got De’Aaron Fox and his salary, you’ve got Domantas Sabonis and his salary. And that’s not me saying those are bad contracts by any means, because they’re not, they’re just bigger contracts,” Smith said.
Additional topics discussed include:
- What is the market for Malik Monk?
- Which teams will have the most cap space this offseason
- The most the Kings can offer Monk compared to other teams around the league
- Which teams will need to make tough decisions this offseason to get under the salary cap
- How the NBA’s next media deal will impact the salary cap
