Melvin will depart Oakland after 11 seasons as the A’s manager

The first–and unexpected–domino to fall in the Oakland A’s offseason has officially fallen.

Longtime A’s manager Bob Melvin has agreed to manage the San Diego Padres, per AJ Cassavell of MLB.com. Melvin, who had his option for 2022 picked up by Oakland earlier in the season, was granted access to interview for the opening in southern California.

According to the report, Melvin will sign a three-year deal with the Padres.

After taking over for Bob Geren in the middle of the 2011 season, Melvin posted an 853-764 (.528) record over 1,617 games from 2011 through 2021. The A’s secured three American League West championships (2012, 2013, 2020) and qualified for the postseason six times over Melvin’s 11 seasons as manager.

Plenty of questions surround the A’s this summer, both on and off the field. The city of Oakland and the A’s remain in negotiations for funding regarding the Howard Terminal site. Players such as Chris Bassitt, Sean Manaea, Matt Olson, Matt Chapman and Frankie Montas are all due for big raises in arbitration.

Add finding a new manager to the list. Melvin was beloved by the fanbase and the locker room, something that will not be easy to replicate in one offseason.

For the first time since the 2006 offseason, the Oakland A’s will begin a managerial search.
