Bob Nightengale: Giants would get a “massive haul” for Logan Webb

How much demand would there be around the MLB for some of the San Francisco Giants’ top players, if they were to shop them in trades?

Bob Nightengale, national MLB Insider for USA Today, joined Kevin “Whitey” Gleason and Allen Stiles on The Drive Guys to give his two cents on which players would have notable value.

Between the bats of Matt Chapman, Willy Adames, and Rafael Devers and pitchers Logan Webb and Robbie Ray, San Francisco has players who could clearly help other teams, but what sort of value would they realistically have?

When Gleason asked how much demand could exist for those players, Nightengale had a simple response. “Very little or no demand,” he replied.

“They’re struggling. Whether it’s Chapman, Devers, Adames,” he continued. “The guys that people want are Robbie Ray, (who) would be a big thing. And, of course, Logan Webb.”

It’s worth noting that this conversation took place before San Francisco’s series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, during which some of those top players, most notably Devers, have started to return to form. Still, their slow starts to the season will take a significant stretch of impressive baseball to overcome.

Nightengale said getting a few prospects in return in exchange for eating salary could make sense for “the big boys.”

“Whether it’s Adames, whether it’s Chapman, whether it’s Devers, one of those things,” he said. “But I don’t think anybody would take on the full contract, so you’d have to pay down on
it.”

Obviously, turning their individual seasons around and the team’s outlook as a result would be the most ideal outcome for the Giants, but perhaps considering moving some of their top talents would be a smart pivot. If they wanted the most value in return, moving on from someone like a lifelong Giant (up to this point) in Webb would likely bring back the biggest return.

Webb is in year three of a five-year, $90 million deal, which would add to his appeal on the open market.

“(They’d get) very big haul (for Webb) because he’s under contract for a while,” Nightengale said. “Obviously, it’d be a lot bigger haul than Robbie Ray because Robbie Ray is gonna be a free agent here at the end of the year, and so when you have Logan Webb for a couple more years, it’d be a massive haul. I don’t think they’d do it. I really don’t. Some GMs do… I can’t see them doing that. I really can’t.”
