Report: A’s to meet with city, county officials about extending Coliseum lease

The Oakland A’s need a temporary home because the team’s lease at the Coliseum expires after this coming season.

If they do end up leaving for Las Vegas, they may not back their bags for a few years.

According to John Shea of the SF Chronicle, the team will meet with Oakland city officials and representatives of Alameda County on Thursday, Feb. 15, to discuss extending their lease.

In 2023, MLB owners unanimously approved the A’s relocation from the Bay Area to Vegas. If and when they move, they’ll play in a brand-new $1.5 billion, nine-acre stadium with around 33,000 seats that’ll be built at the site of the Tropicana.

Owner John Fisher and the A’s organization were granted $380 in public funding for construction, which isn’t expected to be complete until at least 2028.

Already this year, owner John Fisher and members of the A’s front office visited Smith’s Ballpark in Salt Lake City and Sutter Health Park in Sacramento, both Triple-A ballparks, as potential temporary homes after the 2024 MLB season.
