Alex Karaban brings winning pedigree, basketball IQ to Sacramento Kings

The Sacramento Kings made an aggressive move late in the first round of the 2026 NBA Draft to land forward Alex Karaban, and according to longtime UConn analyst Wayne Norman, Sacramento is getting far more than just a talented shooter.

Norman, who has covered UConn basketball for decades and witnessed every one of Karaban’s 151 career games, joined Sactown Sports’ The Drive Guys and described the former Huskies forward with one simple word: “Winner.”

“Winner, simple as that,” Norman said. “When Alex Karaban got here, that changed the script entirely.”

Alex Karaban leaves UConn as one of the most accomplished players in program history.

The 6-foot-8 forward helped lead the Huskies to back-to-back national championships, appeared in three Final Fours, and earned NCAA All-Tournament honors during his senior season.

Karaban also became UConn’s all-time leader in three-pointers made while setting school records for games played, games started, minutes, and victories.

Over four NCAA seasons, Karaban shot 47 percent from the field, 37 percent from three-point range (5.2 attempts per game), and 84 percent from the free-throw line.

While his career averages of 13.2 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 2.4 assists as a senior stand out, Norman believes Karaban’s impact goes beyond the box score.

“He makes everybody on the floor around him a better player,” Norman said. “His stats don’t blow you away, but he gets the concept of team basketball. He knows the playbook, he knows where his teammates are, and he makes other players on the court better.”

The Sacramento Kings trade back into the first round and select Alex Karaban with the 29th pick of the 2026 NBA Draft.

One of the more underrated aspects of Alex Karaban’s game is his playmaking ability. Though widely known for his perimeter shooting, Norman noted that Karaban can initiate offense and consistently make the right read.

“There were times when he was able to find the open shooter,” Norman explained. “He can handle the ball, be away from the hoop, and still make things happen.”

Defensively, Alex Karaban may not be an elite athlete, but his instincts help make up for any physical limitations.

“If I had to use one word, I would say smart,” Norman said. “He may not be the quickest guy on the court, but he understands the scheme, and he knows where to be at the right time. He rarely makes mistakes.”

For a Kings team looking to establish a stronger culture after a difficult 22-win season, Karaban’s championship experience could prove invaluable. Norman believes Sacramento added a player who understands winning and can help elevate those around him.

“I think the Kings did very well,” Norman said of the Kings drafting Karaban and 7th overall pick Darius Acuff Jr. “These two players are a good step in the right direction.”

With his shooting, versatility, and winning pedigree, Alex Karaban could quickly become one of the most reliable role players in Sacramento’s rotation.
