UConn Writer: Why Alex Karaban is a perfect fit for Sacramento

The Sacramento Kings made a move late in the first round of the 2026 NBA Draft to ensure they landed one of the most accomplished players available–one that general manager Scott Perry appeared to have been eyeing well before the draft began.

After trading up to the 29th overall pick, Sacramento selected UConn forward Alex Karaban, a two-time NCAA champion and one of the most decorated players in Huskies history.

The 6-foot-8 forward arrives with four years of college experience, a reputation as one of the nation’s smartest players, and the versatility to contribute without needing the ball in his hands.

Speaking on Sactown Sports’ The Drive Guys, Hartford Courant UConn beat writer Joe Arruda said Karaban’s experience under head coach Dan Hurley should help him make a smooth transition to the NBA.

“I think anybody coming out of Dan Hurley’s program is going to have a level of toughness that translates to the league,” Arruda said. “He’s an all-around player who’s just trying to do everything best for the team. I’ve covered him his whole career, and he was awesome to cover, so I think Sacramento fans are really gonna like him.”

Alex Karaban capped his senior season by averaging 13.2 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 2.4 assists while earning First Team All-Big East honors and NCAA All-Tournament Team recognition.

Across four seasons, he shot 47 percent from the field, 37 percent from three-point range, and 84 percent from the free-throw line while becoming UConn’s all-time leader in made three-pointers.

Arruda believes Karaban’s greatest strength isn’t just his shooting, but his understanding of the game.

“UConn runs one of the more complicated, if not the most complicated offense in college basketball,” Arruda said. “Dan Hurley often will credit him for being the reason why they are able to run that kind of offense because he always seems to be in the right spot. He knows when to cut, he knows where to pass the ball.

“He’s a basketball addict. He’ll be a quick learner, and he seems to make the right play 99 percent of the time.”

While Alex Karaban entered UConn known primarily as a shooter, Arruda said his development over four seasons extended well beyond the offensive end.

The Sacramento Kings trade back into the first round and select Alex Karaban with the 29th pick of the 2026 NBA Draft.

“I would definitely say his assertiveness,” Arruda said. “He’s tried to show that he’s more than just a three-point shooter. On the defensive end, he’s added a lot of strength, and he can hold his own on that end.”

Although many mock drafts projected Alex Karaban early in the second round, Arruda wasn’t surprised that Sacramento aggressively pursued him after his pre-draft workout.

“I think he really liked his visit with the Kings,” Arruda said. “It was clear to him and to the UConn coaches that Sacramento really wanted him. Once that trade was made, you kind of felt like it was him.”

Alex Karaban also offers secondary playmaking, another trait Arruda believes will translate immediately.

“He’s an instinctual passer,” Arruda said. “He’s not throwing flashy passes, he’s always just making the right read.”

That combination of basketball IQ, shooting, passing, and championship experience could give the Kings another NBA-ready contributor as they continue building depth around their young core, as they eye improvements across the board in 2026-27.
