Can Darius Acuff’s offensive skillset outweigh defensive concerns?

As the Sacramento Kings continue to evaluate prospects ahead of the 2026 NBA Draft, one name consistently linked to the organization is Arkansas star guard Darius Acuff Jr.

Holding the seventh overall pick and searching for a long-term answer at point guard, Sacramento appears intrigued by Acuff, a player whose offensive talent may ultimately outweigh questions surrounding his defense.

Acuff put together one of the most productive freshman seasons in college basketball, averaging 23.5 points, 6.4 assists, and shooting an impressive 44 percent from three-point range en route to SEC Player of the Year, SEC Rookie of the Year, and Consensus All-American honors.

According to Inside Arkansas’ Curtis Wilkerson, Acuff quickly established himself as the centerpiece of John Calipari’s Razorbacks squad.

“When we saw Darius Acuff, it was like, okay, there’s your vintage John Calipari guard right there,” Wilkerson told Sactown Sports’ Kayla Anderson. “Ultimate competitor who came in and really changed a lot of the narrative about him.”

Wilkerson noted that Darius Acuff answered nearly every pre-college concern.

Critics questioned whether he was simply an AAU scorer and doubted his outside shooting after a sub-30 percent mark from three in high school. Instead, Acuff became one of the nation’s top facilitators while knocking down 44 percent of his three-point attempts.

The biggest debate surrounding Acuff ahead of the draft remains his defense. However, Wilkerson believes much of the criticism lacks context.

“A lot of people don’t understand that was almost by design,” Wilkerson said of Arkansas’ defensive approach. “Coach Cal was literally telling those guys, hey, if somebody gets a step on you, let your guy score, because we’re going to go down there and get a bucket on the other end, but what we can’t have is foul trouble.”

Wilkerson pushed back against the notion that Acuff lacks defensive ability, citing his physical tools and willingness to improve.

“He’s got plenty of defensive capabilities in him, for sure,” Wilkerson said.

The Arkansas insider highlighted Acuff’s 6-foot-2 frame, 6-foot-7 wingspan, athleticism, and strong build as indicators that defensive growth is realistic at the next level. More importantly, he described Acuff as a player motivated by criticism and eager to address weaknesses.

“If there’s a knock on the guy, if there’s somebody telling him there’s something about his game that’s not perfected, he’s going to do everything he can to get to that point,” Wilkerson said.

For a Kings team seeking a new identity and a future floor general, Acuff’s mentality may be just as appealing as his talent. Wilkerson described him as “all basketball and all business,” adding that pressure situations never seemed to rattle him during Arkansas’ NCAA Tournament run.

With elite scoring, advanced playmaking, and a relentless competitive edge, Acuff’s offensive upside could ultimately make Sacramento comfortable betting on his defensive development.
