Sacramento Kings rookie Darius Acuff Jr. has had an up-and-down introduction to NBA Summer League, but legendary Kings radio voice Gary “G-Man” Gerould believes there is already plenty for fans to be excited about.
Joining Sactown Sports’ The Carmichael Dave Show with Jason Ross, Gerould pointed to Acuff’s combination of explosiveness, court vision and mentality as reasons why the 7th overall pick could quickly become one of Sacramento’s most popular young players.
“The burst of acceleration when he’s attacking the basket. I’ve been impressed with that,” Gerould said. “And the fact that he has this instinct of finding teammates, no-look passes on those attacks of the basket. Those are things that are really encouraging.”
While Acuff has flashed his ability to get downhill throughout Summer League, Gerould acknowledged the biggest adjustment will come on the defensive end.
“The concern is going to be how does he adapt defensively,” Gerould said. “That’s something that is not easily acquired in the NBA.”

More on Darius Acuff Jr.
Even so, the legendary broadcaster believes Darius Acuff Jr. has the mindset to become an impactful NBA player.
“I’m excited about him,” Gerould said. “I think he brings a great presence and a great bit of talent to the Kings organization, and I think he’ll quickly become a fan favorite.”
Part of that appeal comes from Acuff’s calm demeanor. Despite making highlight plays or enduring frustrating stretches, the rookie rarely shows much emotion, something Gerould compared to current Kings forward Keegan Murray.
“He’s very stoic in his demeanor,” Gerould said. “He’s got a little Keegan Murray in that sense. It’s hard to read his emotions on the floor, but he’s a hard-working guy.”
Gerould was especially encouraged by Acuff’s willingness to criticize his own performances. After one Summer League victory, Acuff focused more on his shooting efficiency than the result itself.
“You like that,” Gerould said. “You want to see that kind of fire, that kind of drive and determination.”

Although he stopped well short of comparing Acuff to NBA legends, Gerould believes the rookie shares one important characteristic with the game’s all-time greats.
“One thing that always defines greatness in the NBA is this ability to motivate yourself, never be satisfied, and the drive to get better,” Gerould said. “I’ve seen a lot of those traits.”
Summer League results can be misleading, but Gerould believes Kings fans should remain patient with Acuff’s development.
The rookie’s scoring ability has never been in question. If his defensive game catches up and his work ethic continues to shine through, Sacramento may have found another cornerstone player–and, as Gerould predicts, a future fan favorite.
