The short story: UC Davis basketball received strong performances from both Ty Johnson and Pablo Tamba, but Hawai’i delivered an inspired 40-minute effort, with five different Rainbow Warriors scoring in double figures, handing the Aggies a loss in their final road game of the season Saturday night in O’ahu.

Johnson had a game-high 26 points to go along with three steals
Tamba matched his career-high with 19 points, going 6-for-11 from the field while also grabbing nine rebounds, just nearly missing out on a double-double
Carl Daughtery Jr. had the hot hand off the bench for UC Davis, kicking in with 11 points on 4-of-7 shots from the field as well as leading the charge defensively alongside Johnson with a game-high three steals
UC Davis forced 13 Hawaii turnovers while committing only five themselves in Saturday’s game
The Aggies turned those takeaways into 16 points on the offensive end of the floor

HOW IT HAPPENED

After the Rainbow Warriors got off to a strong 14-5 start, UC Davis responded with a 7-0 run, capped off by a three-pointer from Daughtery Jr. with 12:42 left in the first half, narrowing the deficit to 14-12
UC Davis’s best chance to take the lead came at the 7:44 mark of the first half, when a layup by Tamba tied the game at 21-21
This tie was short-lived, as Hawai’i went on a significant run late in the half, building a 10-point lead with two minutes remaining
The half ended with the Rainbow Warriors leading 35-29
Hawai’i carried their momentum into the second half, going on a 6-0 run with 16:11 remaining to extend their lead to 45-38
UC Davis managed to cut the deficit to just one point with 12:17 left, but the Rainbow Warriors responded with a scoring flurry, fueled by the energy of the home crowd, to regain a nine-point advantage, making it 58-49 with 10:11 remaining
Hawai’i secured their largest lead of the game with 52 seconds left, leading 72-60
The Aggies made a late push, reducing the deficit to just five points, but were unable to complete the comeback
The Rainbow Warriors held on to snap their three-game losing streak, securing a 78-70 victory

UP NEXT: UC Davis has a pair of crucial matchups next week, hosting the two top teams in the Big West: UC Irvine on Thursday at 6 p.m. PT, followed by a nationally televised game against UC San Diego on Saturday at 8 p.m. PT on ESPN2.
