When Are NFL Roster Cut Dates?
NFL training camps and preseason games are well underway.
But, following the conclusion of the NFL’s first full weekend of preseason games, teams begin cutting players.
Throughout the offseason, NFL rosters can hold as many as 90 players. However, those rosters get thinner and thinner through the month of August.
NFL roster cut dates
The first round of NFL roster cuts happens on Tuesday, Aug. 16. Teams will need to trim their rosters to 85 players.
One week, later, rosters will go from 85 players to 80. And the final 53-man roster is selected on Tuesday, Aug. 30. All NFL roster cuts must be made by 4 p.m. EST. The NFL allows teams to have a max of 16 players on practice squads, too.
Following the last round of cuts, teams focus on week 1 of the NFL season. The last day of preseason training camp for the NFL is Sunday, Sept. 4.
The Los Angeles Rams take on the Buffalo Bills at SoFi Stadium on Thursday, Sept. 8, the first game of the 2022 NFL season.
