The San Francisco 49ers’ 5-0 start rests on more than a high-powered offense.

San Francisco’s young defenders are starting to fill key roles, Mike Evans has given Brock Purdy a new way to attack defenses, and the team has found ways to win despite injuries.

Chris Biderman of The Candlestick Chronicles Podcast joined Sactown Sports’ Matt & Kayla to break down what’s behind the start—and what the 49ers might still need to make a Super Bowl run.

“We knew the offense was going to be good,” Biderman said. “But we had questions about the defense.”

Those questions centered on whether San Francisco could develop young players to support its established core.

Biderman said progress is starting to show in players like Renardo Green and Grayson Halton, giving the team more options as it tries to keep its contention window open.

He credited new defensive coordinator Raheem Morris with giving the defensive backs a different voice and more freedom.

The safety group, which entered the season with questions, has also begun to look like a strength, Biderman said, with Malik Mustapha and Ji’Ayir Brown contributing.

The 49ers’ next move could come along the defensive line. Biderman said he would prioritize a defensive tackle, particularly a traditional run-stuffing nose tackle who could help keep interior players fresh.

A pass rusher could also make sense, especially given the uncertainty around Nick Bosa’s availability.

At wide receiver, injuries have thinned the group, but Biderman expects help to return over the coming weeks.

He said a familiar option like Jauan Jennings could make sense if San Francisco decides it needs another receiver, though he’d still rank the defensive line higher.

Evans, meanwhile, has already made a major impact. Despite limited training camp work, he and Purdy have quickly developed a strong connection. Biderman said Evans’ size and ability to make contested catches give the offense something different.

“He’s just a guy who can make plays even when he’s not open,” Biderman said. “He’s clearly been a missing ingredient who complements everyone else the 49ers have on offense really well.”

Biderman sees Purdy’s development as another reason to believe in San Francisco. He said the quarterback has become more precise, processes quickly, and can make plays when the offense breaks down.

For Biderman, the biggest question is health. If the 49ers can keep their key players available through the postseason, he believes they have as good a chance as any team to win the Super Bowl.

Their hot start has put that goal within reach; staying healthy and strengthening the defensive front could help them finish the job.
