The San Francisco 49ers officially open training camp this week, but despite another roster loaded with star power, there are more questions than answers surrounding Kyle Shanahan’s team entering the 2026 season.

Appearing on Sactown Sports’ The Matt & Kayla Show, Locked On 49ers host Brian Peacock pointed to one storyline above all others: whether San Francisco’s veteran core still has enough left to contend for another Super Bowl.

“I think the big story for me is an aging core,” Peacock said. “It is an awesome core. Multiple future Hall of Famers involved in the core, many of them coming off of injuries.”

That list includes George Kittle, Nick Bosa, Christian McCaffrey, Trent Williams and Fred Warner. While Peacock expressed confidence Warner will return to elite form after last season’s injury, he admitted there are legitimate concerns elsewhere.

“The third ACL, the second on the same knee for Nick Bosa. George Kittle. A 33-year-old coming off an Achilles is usually not a great recipe,” Peacock explained. “Christian McCaffrey. Now he’s coming off a year where he had 450 touches, and the track record is not great for a guy who’s hitting 30 years old.”

Peacock believes Warner could become the franchise’s most important player this season.

“I think this might be the year where we kind of look around and we say, okay, the actual number one guy right now, the most important guy on the football team, is Fred Warner,” Peacock said. “I have big hopes and big expectations for Fred Warner this year.”

The conversation also turned to quarterback Brock Purdy, who enters his first full season after signing a franchise-quarterback contract.

Peacock believes Shanahan is placing even more responsibility on Purdy by investing in the passing game rather than making major upgrades along the offensive line.

“What the 49ers did was draft a tall, speedy wide receiver that can potentially win on the outside, and they bet on the passing game getting better on the outside with Brock Purdy to open up the rest of it,” Peacock said.

That approach comes with risk.

“Yes, we are concerned,” Peacock said when asked about the offensive line. “If you’re getting brutalized up front, you’re not going to win football games.”

Defensively, Peacock expects new coordinator Raheem Morris to introduce wrinkles while maintaining much of the defensive identity built under Shanahan. He also highlighted defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa as one of the offseason’s most underrated additions, calling him “probably one of the biggest sleeper additions, not only for the 49ers but around the league.”

With training camp underway, the 49ers still possess championship talent. Whether that aging core can stay healthy long enough to make another Super Bowl run may determine the entire season.
