In honor of the San Francisco 49ers celebrating their 80th anniversary, Sactown Sports is kicking off a countdown of the 80 greatest moments in the franchise’s illustrious history in reverse order called Faithful Flashbacks.

From Super Bowl-winning plays to overperforming teams that had minimal expectations, there’s plenty to choose from the team with five titles under its belt.

The voting was conducted by a handful of Sactown Sports’ staffers before results were compiled into a full list that will count down to the 49ers’ 2026 NFL regular season debut against the Rams in Melbourne, Australia, on September 10th.

Faithful Flashbacks -- San Francisco 49ers 80 Best Moments

Coming in at No. 19 on our ‘Faithful Flashbacks’ countdown of the 80 best moments in franchise history is Steve Young’s 49-yard touchdown run against the Minnesota Vikings.

For most of Young’s early time in San Francisco, he was still viewed through the lens of being Joe Montana’s backup. The 49ers traded for him in 1987, giving Bill Walsh another quarterback to develop, but Montana was still the franchise’s centerpiece, and the player tied to two Super Bowl wins.

That made Young’s situation unusual. He was talented enough to be interesting, and his ability as a runner gave the 49ers something different at quarterback, but there was only so much room to fully show it while playing behind Montana. Most of what Young became later was still years away. The run against Minnesota gave an early look at why the 49ers believed there was more there.

The game came in 1988, a season that eventually ended with San Francisco winning another Super Bowl. But in the moment, the 49ers were still working through an uneven regular season and trying to find the level that would later show up in January. Young getting time at quarterback was part of that stretch, and his scramble against the Vikings became one of the plays that stayed attached to his career.

The play itself seemed to end several times. Young dropped back, moved away from pressure and started working through traffic. Minnesota had chances to bring him down, but Young kept his balance, kept moving and turned what started as a broken play into a 49-yard touchdown.

It was not just a quarterback taking off into open space. The run included changes of direction, missed tackles and enough scrambling that it felt more like something created in the moment than something designed. For a franchise that had already been defined by Montana’s timing and control, Young showed a different type of quarterback play.

The touchdown helped the 49ers beat Minnesota 24-21, but the play became bigger than the final score. It was one of the first major 49ers highlights for Young and a preview of the athletic ability that would eventually become a major part of his Hall of Fame career.

Young would go on to win MVP awards, lead the 49ers to a Super Bowl, and build his own era after Montana. The scramble against the Vikings was not the full arrival, but it remains one of the clearest early snapshots of what made him different.
