In honor of the San Francisco 49ers celebrating their 80th anniversary, Sactown Sports is kicking off a countdown of the 80 greatest moments in the franchise’s illustrious history in reverse order called Faithful Flashbacks.

From Super Bowl-winning plays to overperforming teams that had minimal expectations, there’s plenty to choose from the team with five titles under its belt.

The voting was conducted by a handful of Sactown Sports’ staffers before results were compiled into a full list that will count down to the 49ers’ 2026 NFL regular season debut against the Rams in Melbourne, Australia, on September 10th.

Faithful Flashbacks -- San Francisco 49ers 80 Best Moments

Coming in at No. 20 on our ‘Faithful Flashbacks’ countdown of the 80 best moments in franchise history is the 49ers’ first Super Bowl appearance.

Prior to the 1981 season, San Francisco had never reached the stage of the final game. The 49ers had some strong teams in the past, including a run of division titles in the early 1970s, but the franchise had still not yet broken through for a championship. By the time Bill Walsh arrived, the organization was coming off a rough stretch and needed more than a quick fix.

Walsh’s first two seasons rebuilt the team and set it on the right track. Immediate results weren’t apparent, but the pieces that would eventually change the franchise began to arrive. Joe Montana was still early in his career, Dwight Clark was becoming one of his trusted targets, and the 49ers were building an identity that would become well known sooner rather than later.

The 1981 season set a new standard thanks to their success. San Francisco went 13-3, won the NFC West and turned into one of the league’s most competitive rosters. It wasn’t fully the dynasty roster people may think of now, but instead the beginning, with a young quarterback, a head coach still proving his vision could win at the highest level and a defense that came together faster than expected.

The playoff run established the beginning of their extended stretch of competing for it all. The 49ers beat the Giants to end their postseason drought, then took down Dallas in the NFC Championship Game on “The Catch,” the play that pushed the franchise into its first Super Bowl.

That set up Super Bowl XVI against the Cincinnati Bengals at the Pontiac Silverdome. Montana was named MVP, the defense made enough plays and the 49ers held on for a 26-21 win. For the franchise, it was the first Super Bowl appearance and the first championship. For the city, it was also San Francisco’s first major professional sports title.

There can only ever be one first time for something to occur, and it will forever be inked that way in San Francisco’s franchise history. The 49ers would win more Super Bowls, Walsh would become one of the sport’s defining coaches, and Montana would become one of its defining quarterbacks. But the first one came at the Silverdome, where the 49ers went from a rising team to champions.
