In honor of the San Francisco 49ers celebrating their 80th anniversary, Sactown Sports is kicking off a countdown of the 80 greatest moments in the franchise’s illustrious history in reverse order called “Faithful Flashbacks.”

From Super Bowl-winning plays to overperforming teams that had minimal expectations, there’s plenty to choose from the team with five titles under its belt.

The voting was conducted by a handful of the Sactown Sports’ staffers before results were compiled into a full list that will count down to the 49ers’ 2026 NFL regular season debut against the Rams in Melbourne, Australia, on September 10th.

Faithful Flashbacks -- San Francisco 49ers 80 Best Moments

Coming in at No. 48 on our ‘Faithful Flashbacks’ countdown of the 80 best moments in franchise history is the 49ers’ first playoff appearance.

Before the franchise became known for Super Bowl runs and often had championship expectations, there had to be a first postseason run. In 1957, the 49ers meet the Detroit Lions in a Western Conference tiebreaker at Kezar Stadium.

The 49ers were still relatively new to the NFL at that point. Players such as Y.A. Tittle, Hugh McElhenny, Joe Perry, and R.C. Owens gave the team real star power and helped make the franchise relevant during that period. Only needing to win that game to reach the NFL Championship Game, their start gave plenty of hope.

San Francisco built a big lead in front of their home crowd. But Detroit rallied in the second half and eventually handed the 49ers a painful 31-27 loss. The Lions advanced and eventually won the title. No matter the outcome, it still served as a franchise milestone.

There can only be one first time the 49ers had reached the postseason. It didn’t end with a trophy, but it gave the franchise its first real taste of playoff football.

For the 49ers, the first step onto the postseason stage came at Kezar, long before the moments that would eventually define the franchise nationally as a powerhouse. The ending wasn’t what they would have wanted, but the appearance itself was a sign of what San Francisco was beginning to build.
