Faithful Flashbacks #8: Almost Perfect Season

In honor of the San Francisco 49ers celebrating their 80th anniversary, Sactown Sports is kicking off a countdown of the 80 greatest moments in the franchise’s illustrious history in reverse order called Faithful Flashbacks.

From Super Bowl-winning plays to overperforming teams that had minimal expectations, there’s plenty to choose from on the team with five titles under its belt.

The voting was conducted by a handful of Sactown Sports staffers before the results were compiled into a full list that will count down to the 49ers’ 2026 NFL regular-season debut against the Rams in Melbourne, Australia, on September 10th.

Coming in at No. 8 on our ‘Faithful Flashbacks’ countdown of the 80 best moments in franchise history is the 49ers’ 18-1 season in 1984.

By 1984, the 49ers were proven contenders. Bill Walsh and Joe Montana had delivered the franchise’s first Super Bowl in 1981, beginning an era of hightened expectations in San Francisco. The 49ers missed the playoffs in 1982 during the strike-shortened season, then lost in the NFC Championship Game after the 1983 season.

Their run in 1984 was everything Walsh had been building. Montana was established as one of the league’s best, and the roster around him was strong enough to turn a good team into one of the best in franchise history.

San Francisco looked dominant en route to a 15-1 regular season record. Their lone loss was by three points to the Steelers, robbing them of the undefeated season. No matter, the 49ers were the best team in football, and there was not much debate by the time the season ended.

That season helped push the 49ers from a team that had won one Super Bowl into something closer to a real dynasty. Coach Walsh had the offense operating at a game-changing level, and Montana was the quarterback who made it all work. The 49ers also had enough balance around him to share responsibilities across the roster.

Going 18-1 speaks to the well-crafted and rounded roster San Francisco has built. The 49ers had the quarterback, the coaching, the defense and the week-to-week consistency to be better than almost everyone they played.

Their regular-season success carried over into the postseason with ease. San Francisco handled its first two playoff games, then met Dan Marino and the Miami Dolphins in Super Bowl XIX. Marino’s season had been in the headlines, but it was Montana who won MVP. The 49ers offense put up 38 points to convincingly beat the Dolphins 38-16.

San Francisco’s success continued well beyond 1984, but this was their cleanest season. One loss on the path to a Super Bowl title is a nearly perfect season. That three-point loss to the Steelers probably still irks people, but 18-1 is a historic accomplishment no matter.

The 1984 group deserves its No. 8 spot in this ranking as the height of what Walsh and Montana were building, and the bar every great San Francisco team is measured against.
