49ers Brock Purdy clears concussion protocol, will start Week 8 vs. Bengals

It’s official: Brock Purdy is good to go for the 49ers Week 8 clash with the Cincinnati Bengals Sunday.

The San Francisco 49ers announced Saturday morning that the quarterback had cleared concussion protocol, and will have no injury designation for Sunday’s game.

Purdy showed concussion symptoms after Week 7’s loss to the Minnesota Vikings Monday. After being evaluated by team doctors, he was placed in the NFL’s concussion protocol Tuesday. Unable to practice Wednesday, backup QB Sam Darnold was set to take over starting duties for the time-being.

Then the unthinkable happened, as Brock Purdy reappeared on the practice field Thursday with a helmet on. Fast forward two days later, Purdy was a full participant during Friday’s session, now cleared to start Week 8 for the 49ers.

“Yeah, definitely [he can play],” coach Kyle Shanahan stated if Purdy clared the protocol Saturday. He was full go today, so he’s just got to pass that tomorrow…Yeah, nothing’s been different. He only could do walk-through the first day. So, he missed a couple periods with that when we had helmets on versus the D.”

Purdy, 23, is 10-2 in regular-season starts since taking the mantle for the injured Jimmy Garoppolo last season. He has thrown 24 touchdowns, seven interceptions and has 67.5% completion rate. He has been steady since e taking the QB1 job, sporting a 75.7 quarterback rating this season.

Now tasked with rebounding from two-straight losses, Week 8 against the Bengals is paramount for the 49ers, hoping to go into their bye week on a high note.
