How the 49ers can clinch a postseason spot in Week 16

While the San Francisco 49ers continue to chase down the top spot in the NFC standings, they can punch their ticket to the postseason as soon as this weekend.

The 49ers, who improved to 10-4 on the season following Sunday’s win over the Tennessee Titans, are heating up at the right time as they enter Week 16 on a season-best four-game winning streak.

As San Francisco prepares for a Monday Night Football matchup against 44-year-old Phillip Rivers and the Indianapolis Colts, the postseason clinch scenarios have become clear for teams in the playoff chase.

Here’s how the 49ers can clinch a postseason berth as soon as Week 16:

• SF can also clinch if they tie and the Lions tie

A win over Indianapolis is the easiest way for San Francisco to clinch a postseason berth, while a Detroit loss to the Steelers on Sunday can also get the job done.

Following Sunday’s win over the Tians, San Francisco is in the thick of the chase for the top seed in the NFC Playoff picture.

San Francisco (10-4) remains one game behind fellow NFC West counterparts Seattle (11-3) and the Los Angeles Rams (11-3) with three regular-season games to go.

Although the 49ers may fall short of clinching the top seed in the NFC, they are still looking like a team that can win on any night, regardless of the opponent.

“They can beat any of these teams,” The Athletic’s Matt Barrows said of San Francisco’s place among NFC leaders.

“If I were the 49ers, I would want to go to Tampa Bay, or now that Micah Parsons is out for the season, Green Bay. I know that the Eagles are flawed, but the Eagles run the ball and have a great offensive line. That’s the team I would probably want to avoid the most.”

As the Faithful continue to push towards the postseason, head coach Kyle Shanahan was a significant topic of conversation during Monday’s conversation with Barrows.
