Barrows: Fred Warner return ‘not happening’ vs Seattle
The Athletic's Matt Barrows says that San Francisco 49ers star LB Fred Warner (ankle) will not return for Saturday's playoff showdown in Seattle.

While the San Francisco 49ers’ win over the Philadelphia Eagles instilled some hope that star linebacker Fred Warner could return for the next round of the playoffs, it’s looking unlikely that we will see the 29-year-old in action this weekend.
During Tuesday morning’s edition of The Carmichael Dave Show with Jason Ross, The Athletic’s Matt Barrows joined the show to share his thoughts on San Francisco’s Wild Card win over the defending Super Bowl champion Eagles and share injury updates on several key 49ers players, with Warner’s status at the top of the list.
Warner, who has been sidelined since Week 6 due to a fractured and dislocated right ankle, has been ramping up his activity in hopes of making a return to the gridiron this postseason.
It was previously thought that Warner could be an option for the 49ers in the Divisional Round, but Barrows says the four-time Pro Bowler will not be in action on Saturday against the rival Seattle Seahawks.
“As far as Fred Warner–it’s not happening this week, apparently,” Barrows said. “I asked [49ers head coach] Kyle Shanahan that after the Eagles game, ‘Are you going to open Fred Warner’s window this week?’ because we saw Warner on the side field doing work, looking pretty good.
“I know, I don’t even have to ask Fred Warner this, but I know in my heart of hearts that he thinks that he’s ready to play right now. But they’re not going to force it, and they’re not going to put him in jeopardy. If they somehow win this one, you’re going to need a team or horses to keep Fred Warner from playing in the NFC Championship Game in either Chicago or Los Angeles the following week.”
