The 49ers have been looking around the country for wide receiver talent this offseason, now turning their sights to another legacy player in Terique Owens.

Reports surfaced Friday that the San Francisco 49ers were one of 20 teams that sent scouts to evaluate the Missouri State wideout Friday. Other teams have not been specified at this time, with only the Red & Gold listed in attendance.

NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco reported the news Friday.

Terique Owens, 23, is the son of Hall of Fame WR Terrell Owens, who spent his first eight seasons with the 49ers. The elder Owens amassed over 1,000 catches and almost 16,000 receiving yards in 15 years in the league. He also had 153 touchdowns to his name. Owens made the Pro Bowl six times, and the All-Pro team on five occasions.

Nicknamed “T.O.” Owens played for the Cowboys, Eagles, Bills and Bengals before hanging it up after 2010.

His son, Terique, is now looking to start his own NFL journey. He’s had a bumpy road to this point, unable to get much playing time at Florida Atlantic University before transferring to Missouri State in 2021. Owens amassed 765 yards in three years in the Missouri Valley Conference. 2023 was a breakout season, putting up 528 yards and four scores in 10 contests.

Now looking to start his NFL journey, it could be an uphill battle once more, not on many Big Boards a month out from the draft.

This is the second wide receiver prospect the 49ers have inquired about with former ties to the organization. The Red & Gold have also shown interest in USC WR Brenden Rice, the son of Hall-of-Famer Jerry Rice.

Key offseason dates for the San Francisco 49ers
