Shanahan: Tests confirm 49ers star WR Brandon Aiyuk suffered torn ACL & MCL

The blows keep coming for the 49ers, now without Brandon Aiyuk for the rest of the 2024 season.

San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed that the star wide receiver suffered a torn ACL and MCL in Week 7’s loss to Kansas City Chiefs. The initial tests confirmed such, with MRI results suggesting extensive damage to Aiyuk’s right knee. Further ligament damage remains a possibility at this time.

After putting together an All-Pro 2023 season, B.A. will now be shelved for the foreseeable future. A return at the start of the 2025 season is in question as well.

Shanahan and the 49ers had feared the significant knee injury postgame Sunday, as NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport confirmed the serious injury Monday afternoon.

The 49ers were already down fellow wide receivers Jauan Jennings and Deebo Samuel in Week 7. Already an injury-plagued 2024 for the Red & Gold, as star running back Christian McCaffrey has yet to play a down this season.

SF will now have to get by without another star playmaker in Brandon Aiyuk; A crushing blow to the 2023 NFC Champions.

“Obviously just what B.A. does for our offense and who he is and as a teammate and a brother of ours, it’s sad. Wishing him nothing but the best and praying for him. That’s my guy,” quarterback Brock Purdy said postgame. “We’ve all just got to come together as a group, collectively, as the receiver unit and all of us. Guys just got to step up and they have. That’s the nature of the sport, sadly.”

The San Francisco 49ers wide receiver suffered an apparent knee injury during the closing minutes of the first half against the Kansas City Chiefs. Down in the redzone, Aiyuk caught a pass over the middle, immediately met by two Chiefs’ defenders for a collision. The wideout’s right leg was forced inward by KC’s Chamarri Conner, hyperextending the lower-body part on impact. Aiyuk fell to the grass in a heap of pain, needing an extended look by the training staff.

While the player was able to walk off under his own power, he was carted to the locker room, out for the remainder of the game.

Aiyuk, 26, signed a four-year, $120 million extension prior to the start of the regular season, with $76 million guaranteed. The California native had struggled to live up to the deal, having numerous lackluster performances in 2024. Prior to getting hurt, “BA” had two catches for 23 receiving yards on six targets. He finishes the 2024 season with 23 receptions for 351 yards.

Since being drafted in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, Aiyuk has amassed 307 total touches for 4,422 scrimmage yards and 27 touchdowns. He also made the All-Pro team in 2023.
