There may not be much to be hyped about with the Oakland Athletics, but Zack Gelof is giving fans a reason to be optimistic for the future.

Gelof was called up from Triple-A in early July. Since then, he’s become the first Athletics player in franchise history to have 20 extra-base hits and 20 runs scored through his first 28 career games played, according to MLB.

And to take it outside of Oakland, as of Aug. 17, the rookie infielder leads the MLB in extra-base hits for the month of August with 11.

Following Wednesday’s game, manager Mark Kotsay said the team is having a lot of fun watching him.

“He’s playing with a lot of confidence,” Kotsay told the media. “For young guys to come here and have that type of success, it obviously builds their confidence. But not only that, he’s a player that in spring training, tried to make the team out of spring training, and went to Triple-A and continued to work. And it’s paying off here.”

Gelof was drafted in the second round of the 2021 MLB Draft. Before he got called up to the majors, the 23-year-old hit 12 home runs on a .304 batting average while also recording 44 RBIs and 20 stolen bases for the Las Vegas Aviators.
