Players will be heading to Florida and Arizona for Spring Training in one month, but a majority of the big names on the MLB free agent market remain without a home.
This offseason continues to move at a crawling pace as 29 teams not named the Los Angeles Dodgers hope to make a splash during the final weeks of the MLB offseason.
Several top free agent arms remain, with reigning National League Cy Young award winner Blake Snell and World Series champion Jordan Montgomery next in line to receive large contracts.
While the San Francisco Giants have been linked to Snell, Montgomery, and third baseman Matt Chapman, they also have eyes on another free-agent arm whose market has reportedly started to heat up over the past week:
Marcus Stroman.
More on free agent pitcher Marcus Stroman
According to FanSided’s MLB insider Robert Murray, the Giants are “absolutely” interested in signing Stroman.
“I know one pitcher they absolutely do have interest in is Marcus Stroman,” Murray said this week on The Baseball Insiders podcast.
“Stroman is someone who’s had a very interesting free agency this year so far because of the fact there’s been hardly any buzz with him. There’s been a lot of different things about other pitchers but with Stroman, it’s really been rather quiet. But the Giants are interested in Stroman. They’re casting a rather wide net in that starting pitching search.”
After falling short in their pursuits of Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto as both signed with the rival Dodgers, San Francisco is in the market for starting pitching help.
While the Giants recently swung a deal that sent outfielder Mitch Haniger and starter Anthony DeSclafani to the Seattle Mariners in return for 2021 AL Cy Young Award winner Robbie Ray, San Francisco needs to fill some rotation spots as Ray works his way back from Tommy John Surgery.
Stroman, 32, would be a solid addition to the Giants’ pitching staff following an All-Star campaign in 2023.
While pitching for the Chicago Cubs, the veteran right-hander finished the season with a 10-9 record, 3.95 ERA, and 1.25 WHIP while striking out 119 batters over 136.2 innings.
Over nine MLB seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays, New York Mets, and Cubs, Stroman has pitched to a 77-76 record and 3.65 ERA over 231 games (223 starts).
After declining a $21 million option that would keep him in Chicago for 2024, Stroman is reportedly seeking a multi-year deal as several teams line up for his services.
Along with San Francisco, the New York Yankees, Philadelphia Phillies, Los Angeles Angels, Baltimore Orioles and Boston Red Sox also are potential suitors for Stroman, per multiple reports.
The Giants have made it clear that they intend to add more talent before reporting to Spring Training next month, and it their pursuits of Snell and Montgomery fall short, Stroman could be in play as San Francisco looks to surround ace Logan Webb with more talent.
