With the arrival of pitchers, catchers and coaches in Arizona for Spring Training, the San Francisco Giants have provided a health update on pitcher Alex Cobb.
After last season, Cobb underwent off-season hip surgery to “address his labrum and ongoing impingement issues.”
“Alex Cobb is currently throwing out to 90 feet three times a week and is progressing as planned,” the team announced Wednesday, Feb. 14. They added he’ll “remain limited in spring training.”
Cobb was a force for the Giants early in the season, but injuries hampered the 36-year-old veteran for the second half of the season. He was shut down in September.
First half: 6-2, 2.91 ERA, 86 K over 89.2 innings
Second half: 1-5, 5.25 ERA, 45 K over 61.2 innings
Shortly after announcing Cobb’s surgery, the Giants picked up the veteran’s $10 million option for the 2024 season. Cobb was named to the MLB All-Star team for the first time in his career in 2023 which saw the right-hander post the Giants’ third-highest wins-above-average rating (2.6).
