With Opening Day less than two weeks away, teams around Major League Baseball are beginning to trim down their Spring Training rosters.

According to NBC Sports’ Alex Pavlovic, the San Francisco Giants have optioned rookie centerfielder Wade Meckler to AAA Sacramento. The 23-year-old has hit well this spring (.423 average, 9 RBI), but the Giants’ logjam in the outfield has pushed the prospect out of the Opening Day conversation.

San Francisco currently has a surplus of outfield talent, with Mike Yastrzemski, LaMonte Wade Jr., Michael Conforto, Jung Hoo-Lee, Luis Matos, Austin Slater, Heliot Ramos, and Meckler all in the mix for playing time this season.

Meckler, who hit .232 over 20 games with the Giants last season, will get everyday reps with the Sacramento River Cats along with Ramos, as both players will be first in line if San Francisco gets bit by the injury bug.

Along with Meckler, the Giants have also reassigned veteran outfielder Yoshi Tsutsugo to minor league camp, along with infielder Donovan Walton, left-handed pitcher (SF’s number-three prospect) Carson Whisehunt, and right-handed pitcher Tommy Romero.
