When the San Francisco Giants added last year’s Cy Young Award winner to their roster, they did something the majors haven’t seen since 2003.
On Tuesday, March 19, the Giants reached a two-year, $62 million agreement with left-handed pitcher Blake Snell, bringing the two-time Cy Young Award winner to the Bay Area. Paired with ace Logan Webb, San Francisco now has the National League Cy Young Award winner and runner-up in its 2024 rotation.
Having both the Cy Young winner and runner-up on the same roster is pretty rare. According to MLB’s Sarah Langs and the Elias Sports Bureau, the last time this happened was in 2003 when the Arizona Diamondbacks had both Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling as their one-two punch.
with Blake Snell + Logan Webb, the Giants will be the 7th team w/2 pitchers who both finished top-2 in CYA voting (either lg) the prior season, joining:

Prior to this year, a pairing of this caliber has only happened six total times in Major League Baseball:
- In 2003 and 2002, Randy Johnson (winner) and Curt Schilling (runner-up) pitched for the Arizona Diamondbacks
- In 1993, Greg Maddux (winner) and Tom Glavine (runner-up) pitched for the Atlanta Braves. Maddux won the award with the Chicago Cubs then signed with the Braves the following offseason.
- In 1990, Bret Saberhagen (AL winner) and Mark Davis (NL winner) pitched for the Kansas City Royals. Saberhagen won the American League Cy Young Award with the Royals and Davis won the National League Cy Young Award with the San Diego Padres.
- In 1975, Mike Marshall (winner) and Andy Messersmith (runner-up) pitched for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
- In 1957, Don Newcombe (winner) and Sal Maglie (runner-up) pitched for the Brooklyn Dodgers.
