It’s been a tough year for San Francisco Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford.
Crawford was placed on the 10-day injured list for the second time over the past month on Sunday, this time with a left forearm strain that was suffered during Friday night’s series-opening loss in Atlanta.
The 36-year-old’s roster spot was filed by outfielder Luis Matos, who was sent down to AAA Sacramento last week to work on his hitting.
In his first game back with the big league club, Matos drilled his second home run of the season during the Giants’ 4-3 win over the Braves.

While Matos’ explosive return to the lineup was a bright spot, the loss of Crawford looms large as San Francisco continues its push for the postseason.
Crawford’s leadership on and off the field and extensive playoff experience make him an important piece for this Giants team, regardless of his struggles in the batter’s box.
The 13-season veteran is currently experiencing the worst offensive season of his career, as Crawford holds a .194 batting average with six home runs and 32 RBI over 77 games (242 at-bats).
Crawford has dealt with several injuries this season, as the shortstop was placed on the injured list last month with left knee inflammation before this current trip.
Some time away to recover could do Crawford some good, but the Giants will have to quickly fill the hole their leader will leave behind as a tough schedule rolls on. San Francisco’s next five opponents are in the race for a National League Wild Card spot, including Monday’s opponent, the Philadelphia Phillies.
With Crawford on the shelf, expect Johan Camargo and Casey Schmitt to play the bulk of innings at shortstop.
More Giants Roster Moves
Along with Crawford being placed on the injured list and Luis Matos being recalled, the Giants made a few more moves over the weekend:
- Placed pitcher Ross Stripling on the injured list (mild back strain)
- Placed pitcher Ryan Walker on the paternity list
