The San Francisco Giants’ disappointing 2023 season got a parting gift on Wednesday as the franchise set a new single-season record:
Strikeouts.
Not the good kind of strikeouts, either. San Francisco batters have been sent down on strikes 1,468 times this season, a total that establishes a new Giants single-season franchise record, topping the team’s 1,467 strikeouts during the 2018 season–a year that saw SF finish with a record of 73-89.
Rookie outfielder Tyler Fitzgerald was the 1,468th strikeout of the season, as San Diego Padres closer Josh Hader punched out the 26-year-old during the Giants’ extra-innings loss on Wednesday night.
San Francisco also added to its MLB lead in errors after making three blunders in the field during the 5-2 loss against the Padres.

It’s been that kind of season for San Francisco, as the 2023 campaign quickly turned from promising to nightmare following the team’s strong start through June (46-36).
Since July 1st, the Giants hold a 32-43 record and have fallen from 2.5 games behind the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers to 20.5 games out of the National League West lead and eliminated from Wild Card contention.
During San Francisco’s rough summer, the Giants struck out on an average of 8.8 times per game while batting .223 with a disappointing .658 on-base-plus-slugging percentage over their past 76 games.
We aren’t just talking about an insufficient sample size of games, but a majority of a season that is now lost.
Team president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi will have his hands full this winter as he will seek some offensive firepower to help push this lackluster Giants offense in the right direction in 2024.
