Following a five-day break, the San Francisco Giants will return on Friday night when they open the second half of the season in Pittsburgh.
The Giants (49-41) will face a Pirates team that has lost seven of its past nine games and holds a 41-49 record–fourth place in the National League Central and eight games back of San Francisco’s third (and final) Wild Card spot.
Each second-half game comes with its own sense of importance, and the Giants need every win they can get in a competitive race for the National League West crown.
As of Friday, San Francisco sits 2.5 games behind the first-place Arizona Diamondbacks and Los Angeles Dodgers as teams begin to start up play.

Heading into the break, the Giants brushed off a stretch that saw them lose three-straight series as San Francisco took two out of three from the Colorado Rockies.
The Giants will begin a favorable stretch of play that includes matchups against the struggling Pirates, Washington Nationals (36-54), Detroit Tigers (39-50), and Oakland Athletics (25-67) over the next two weeks.
If San Francisco wants to close the gap on Arizona and Los Angeles in the NL West standings, that process can start on Friday in Pittsburgh.
