DAVIS, Calif. — Ranked among the nation’s top three-point shooters all season long, senior guard Stefan Gonzalez now holds the No. 1 percentage from three, among all NCAA Division I players after sinking 5 of 7 shots in the Aggies’ record-setting game last Saturday against CSUN.
What started on Jan. 25 at Hawai’i, when the Pocatello, Idaho native hit a career-high 7 of 10 from distance, continued each game throughout the last few weeks: Gonzalez needs only a fraction of a second, and a sliver of space to knock down shots from three, which is something he has accomplished on a consistent basis at an elite level.
Over the last six games, he has nailed 21 of 35 attempts (.600 pct.) from behind the arc.
At his current pace, Gonzalez is on track to set new all-time program records in three-point percentage and three-point field goals — figures currently held by Corey Hawkins (.488; 2014-15 season) and Ryan Sypkens (106; 2012-13).
Gonzalez’ lights-out shooting is a key reason why UC Davis won four of its last five played, and will enter Thursday’s 7 p.m. league matchup at Cal Poly on a three-game win streak.
