Tom Brady shocked the football world earlier this year. No, it wasn’t when he retired for a second time, although that was surprising.
In May, Brady bought a minority stake in the Las Vegas Raiders, a team with plenty of connections to his New England days. Raiders general manager Dave Ziegler and head coach Josh McDaniels were both part of the Patriots organization with Brady.
This was his second minority stake in a Las Vegas franchise. Months before his deal with the Raiders, Tom Brady bought a minority stake in the Las Vegas Aces. Both teams are owned by Mark Davis.
In a recent interview with the Associated Press, Brady said he chose to get involved with the Raiders because he grew up in the Bay Area and it was an opportunity he couldn’t pass up.
When I look at a lot of the people that have impacted the NFL over a long period of time in the most positive way, (former Raiders owner and GM) Al Davis is one of them. And he’s not with us anymore but I’ve heard incredible stories. And then the opportunity came about to become a minority owner in the Raiders, it was a dream come true for me. I’ll be playing a very passive role. This is something that I’m interested in doing for the rest of my life. This is not something that I’m into it for a year or two years.
CBS Sports reports Brady still needs to be approved by the league’s owners.
