Before the San Francisco 49ers playoff run began, a story surfaced that the team was trying to bring Tom Brady out of retirement.
In an interview with ESPN’s Nick Wagner, current San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy relayed a story that the 49ers wanted Brady to be their starting quarterback. This was regardless of whether Purdy was healthy or not.
Early in the offseason, Niners coach Kyle Shanahan sat down with Purdy and assured him that if he was healthy he would be the starter unless Brady wanted to play one more season for his hometown Niners. An ecstatic Purdy understood the logic, but the competitor in him also bubbled under the surface.
Brady, who officially retired after the 2022 season, appeared on the “Pat McAfee Show” earlier this week where he, sort of, addressed that report.
“Brock’s done a great job with the opportunity. He got it and he’s taken advantage of it. He was a late-round pick, I know he’s got a chip on his shoulder and he wants to go out there and prove every day that he’s the right fit for that team. It’s a great organization they’re running, I really respect Kyle, but Brock’s done a hell of a job,” Brady told McAfee.

Tom Brady went on to say he enjoyed being able to sit back and watch football as he prepares to enter the booth next season for FOX as a game analyst. In May 2022, he signed a 10-year, $375 million contract with FOX to join their broadcasting team.
