If the San Francisco 49ers were trying to put out the Jimmy Garoppolo flame, they’ll have to keep trying. General manager John Lynch spoke to the media inside the 49ers’ draft room Thursday morning, confirming the team was in real discussions to trade their former starting quarterback during the NFL Combine.
“Combine time, there were really serious talks. Probably 2-3 teams that I felt this was going to happen. That’s when news broke (of shoulder surgery). Then things went the way they went. I’m glad we’ve arrived where we’re at…we’re happy he’s here,” Lynch said.
The revelation comes after Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan broke down the decision to keep Jimmy G on the roster as a backup earlier in the week, an idea that the latter didn’t think was possible a month ago.
“I think that was because the chances were, to me, it seemed slim to none, just with the possibility of that happening,” Shanahan said.
Regardless of the past, we’re here now and Garoppolo took the field for his first practice with the team Wednesday.

The veteran gunslinger had previously been working off to the side of team practices during training camp, rehabbing from March’s shoulder surgery.
Garoppolo has been a winning quarterback since arriving in the Bay, holding a record of 31-14 over five seasons. He has accumulated 11,162 passing yards, 66 TDs, and 38 INTs as a member of the 49ers, taking them to the Super Bowl and NFC Championship in that time.
Now scheduled for his first relief role since his time with the New England Patriots, Jimmy G will be mentoring second-year prospect Trey Lance this season.
