Gallegos: Early feedback on the Athletics new home in Sacramento

Martin Gallegos of MLB.com joined The Allen Stiles Show to discuss the Athletics’ debut in Sacramento on Monday night and whether that game was a sign of things to come this season.

Plus, will any A’s players will be using “torpedo bats”, and how the A’s could be the surprise of MLB this season?

Martin acknowledged that while the 18-3 loss they suffered to the Chicago Cubs wasn’t an ideal test, the environment that was created in Sacramento was promising.

“I think the players and coaches overall were kinda pleased with how day one went outside of the game,” he told Allen.

That included the newly renovated clubhouse, batter’s eye, scoreboard, sound system, field, and more.

With plenty more games left to be played in Sutter Health this season between the Athletics and the Sacramento River Cats, we’ll see how it all holds up.

It was fitting that the first Major League Baseball game in Sacramento at Sutter Health Park mirrored similar conditions to the day the Athletics’ temporary move to California’s capital city was announced.

Last April, the A’s and Sacramento Kings announced a joint press conference that was set to take place at Sutter Health Park, home of the Sacramento River Cats–AAA affiliate of the San Francisco Giants.

It was a rainy, windy day—one that doesn’t mirror a typical Sacramento spring day—as Athletics owner John Fisher and Kings owner Vivek Ranadive announced that baseball would officially be leaving Oakland and that the franchise’s impending relocation would include a multi-year pit stop in West Sacramento.

Fast forward nearly one year later, and those cold, windy conditions welcomed the first regular season Major League Baseball in Sutter Health Park history.
