A’s place 1B Nick Kurtz on 10-day Injured List

The A's have placed young, up-and-coming first-baseman Nick Kurtz on the 10-day injured list with a strained left hip flexor.

Swept for three straight series, the Athletics finally ended their losing streak at 11 with a 5-4 win over the visiting Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday, May 25th.

Rookie first-baseman Nick Kurtz had started to find a stellar rhythm, tallying two hits and two walks before suffering a strained left hip flexor that led to pinch-runner Logan Davidson making his major league debut.

After missing the game that ended the A’s slump, Kurtz has officially been placed on the 10-day injured list.

In the meantime, the Athletics called up outfielder Drew Avans from Las Vegas.

The Athletics placed first baseman Nick Kurtz on the 10-day injured list retroactive to May 25 with a strained left hip flexor and selected outfielder Drew Avans from Triple-A Las Vegas, the club announced today. The A’s also acquired left-handed pitcher Sean Newcomb from the Boston Red Sox for cash considerations. To clear space on the 40-man roster, the A’s designated left-handed pitcher Matt Krook and right-handed pitcher Ryan Cusick for assignment. Kurtz was selected from Las Vegas on April 23 and is batting .245 with five home runs and 15 RBI in 28 games in his Major League debut. He is tied for fifth in the majors among rookies in home runs and tied for ninth in RBI. Kurtz was 7-for-17 (.412) with four home runs, nine RBI, five runs and five walks over his last five games.

Avans was batting .326 with four home runs, 34 RBI, 30 walks, a .414 on-base percentage and 16 stolen bases in 48 games with Las Vegas and will be making his Major League debut. He leads all of minor league baseball in hits (62) and tops the Pacific Coast League in runs scored (41). The 28-year-old left-handed hitter also ranks second in the PCL in stolen bases, fourth in batting, fifth in on-base percentage, tied for seventh in RBI and tied for eighth in walks. Avans has started 21 games in left field, 20 in center field and four in right field. He was originally selected by the Dodgers in the 33rd round of the 2018 First-Year Player draft and was a non-roster invitee with the A’s this spring after signing a minor league contract on Nov. 20, 2024. Avans is a .277 career hitter with 55 home runs, 315 RBI, a .370 on-base percentage and 177 stolen bases in 691 games over seven seasons in the minors.

In 108 at-bats through 28 games, Kurtz was hitting .245 with five home runs and 15 RBIs but those numbers looked even better as of late.

Four of those homers came in his five most recent showings, where he also managed nine RBIs. The injury is a minor setback for Kurtz, who is projected to be a key piece of the A’s organization moving forward.

Athletics rookie Nick Kurtz joined The Carmichael Dave Show with Jason Ross after the first multi-home run game of his career, which came in an A’s loss.

Those circumstances lead to mixed emotions. “It’s tough,” Kurtz said. “Bottom line, the only thing I really care about is winning, and if I go 0-for or if I hit two home runs, a win is the only thing that matters. So, (I) just focus on doing that moving forward.”

Selected fourth overall in the 2024 MLB Draft, the rookie was called up to The Athletics towards the end of April.
