SF Giants shakeup roster, DFA LaMonte Wade Jr. & sign Dom Smith

As the San Francisco Giants continue to stumble offensively, they are searching for answers in an aggressive fashion.

The Giants announced a flurry of roster moves on Wednesday that included the parting of ways with longtime 1B/OF LaMonte Wade Jr., who was designated for assignment following five seasons in San Francisco.

Wade, who was hitting just .167 with one home run over 50 games this season, batted .240 to go along with 52 home runs and 176 RBI since being acquired from Minnesota in 2021.

Backup catcher Sam Huff was also DFA’d by the Giants, while San Francisco optioned infielder Christian Koss to AAA Sacramento.

Veteran first baseman Dominic Smith has been signed to a Major League deal and will be active for Wednesday night’s game against the San Diego Padres.

Smith, an eight-year veteran first baseman who has spent time in the majors with the New York Mets, Washington Nationals, Boston Red Sox, and Cincinnati Reds, opted out of his minor league deal with the New York Yankees last week.

The 29-year-old was hitting .255 with eight home runs and 28 RBI, along with 20 walks against 30 strikeouts over 45 games with New York’s AAA affiliate, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Smith will likely get plenty of action at first base as San Francisco’s top prospect, first baseman Bryce Eldridge, works his way through AAA after being promoted to Sacramento on Tuesday.

Over eight MLB seasons, Smith holds a batting average of .246, an on-base percentage of .313, and a slugging percentage of .403 to complement 64 home runs and 259 RBI.

The Giants have struggled to produce runs lately, failing to score more than four runs in 16 consecutive games, while batting .206 as a team in the process. As a result, they have fallen four games behind the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West standings.

As the San Francisco Giants continue to search for answers on offense, Bryce Eldridge is inching closer to making his major league debut.

The Giants announced this week that top prospect Bryce Eldridge has been promoted from AA Richmond to AAA Sacramento, meaning that the first baseman is one stop–and a 90-minute drive–away from joining the big-league club in San Francisco.

Eldridge, 20, was the 16th overall selection in the 2023 MLB Draft out of Madison High School in Vienna, Virginia.
