San Francisco Giants trade for All-Star 3B/DH Rafael Devers

Buster Posey has made a statement move in his first year as the San Francisco Giants’ president of baseball operations.

According to MLB insider Robert Murray, the Giants have acquired All-Star third baseman and designated hitter Rafael Devers from the Boston Red Sox in a blockbuster deal that will bring San Francisco one of the league’s best hitters over the past decade.

Devers, a three-time All-Star and two-time Silver Slugger award winner, was moved off his natural position of third base due to Boston’s signing of Alex Bregman. The 28-year-old refused to play first base when asked earlier this season, sparking speculation that trouble was brewing behind the scenes.

Now, Devers is on his way to San Francisco with eight years and $250 million remaining on his contract.

According to Murray’s report, former top San Francisco Giants prospect Kyle Harrison will be heading to Boston in the deal, as will right-hander Jordan Hicks.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan adds that San Francisco will take on the rest of Devers’s contract, while the Red Sox will also acquire outfielder James Tibbs (No. 4 Giants prospect via MLB).

Devers is hitting .272 with 15 home runs and 58 RBI in 2025 over 272 at-bats (73 games). Throughout his nine-year career, the 2018 World Series champion has batted .279, posting an on-base percentage of .349, a slugging percentage of .510, and an on-base-plus-slugging percentage of .859.

The Dominican Republic product led the American League with 55 walks this season while posting a career-best 16.7% walk rate.

With Matt Chapman recovering from a hand injury, it’s possible that Devers can spend some time back at third base with the Giants, but it’s fair to expect that most of his reps will come at the designated hitter spot.

San Francisco’s top prospect, first baseman Bryce Eldridge, is quickly ascending through the minor leagues and is currently in AAA Sacramento.

The 16th overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft is hitting .281 with 38 home runs and 119 RBI to start his minor league career (192 games over five levels).

With Devers in the picture, the Giants now have the power bat they have been longing for over the years. It’s possible that Devers could do for San Francisco what he wouldn’t for Boston–play first base–but that spot is Eldrige’s for the taking.

We’ll see how things unfold in the coming days as it pertains to Devers’ position, but one thing is clear: Posey is not messing around in his first year at the helm as San Francisco Giants president.
