There had been plenty of speculation surrounding Athletics closer Mason Miller as the MLB trade deadline neared, and now it’s official that the star pitcher will be on the move.
According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the A’s have traded Miller and starting pitcher JP Sears to the San Diego Padres in a deal that sends the top bullpen arm on the trade market to the National League West.

Mason Miller, 26, holds a 3.76 ERA on the year, but has been one of the best relief pitchers in baseball over the past two seasons.
In return for Miller, the A’s have received shortstop Leodalis De Vries (#3 prospect in all of Major League Baseball) and three pitching prospects from the Padres.
De Vries is batting .245 with eight home runs and 46 RBI over 82 games in High-A this season. The 18-year-old infielder is listed as Baseball America’s 18th-ranked prospect, while Baseball Prospectus has him at 23rd.
Sears, a left-handed starting pitcher who is 7-9 on the year with a 4.95 ERA, is also heading to San Diego with Miller.
Mason Miller will become a free agent at the end of the 2029 season, while Sears will enter free agency in 2028.

On the eve of the MLB trade deadline, the San Francisco Giants have made it clear they will not be hard buyers in this market.
According to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, the Giants have traded right-handed reliever Tyler Rogers to the New York Mets in return for prospects Blake Tidwell (pitcher), Drew Gilbert (outfielder), and relief pitcher Jose Butto (3.64 ERA over 47 innings this season).
Rogers has been in the Giants organization since being drafted by San Francisco in the 10th round of the 2013 MLB Draft, but is now on the move for the first time in his Major League career.
Over a league-leading 53 appearances this season, the submarine-pitching Rogers holds a 1.80 ERA while striking out 38 batters over 50 innings.
The move to trade Rogers, one of the best relief pitchers in the game this season, could be the start of a quiet sell-off for the Giants as they navigate a brutal stretch that has dropped them to the .500 mark for the first time since the opening days of the regular season.
San Francisco entered play on Wednesday sitting nine games out of first place in the National League West and five games behind the San Diego Padres for the third and final Wild Card spot.
The Giants already bought big by acquiring Rafael Devers earlier this season, but could look to move more bullpen arms over the next 24 hours to stock up their farm system and look ahead to 2026 and beyond.
