Mayor Kevin McCarty: Sacramento still ‘in the mix’ for MLB expansion

The Athletics are in the midst of their first of what’s expected to be their three-season stay in California’s capital.

While plans remain in place for the team to relocate to Las Vegas, Sacramento mayor Kevin McCarty says they’re “still in the mix for baseball.”

I’ve been talking to the A’s and the MLB. I think they’re more than likely going to go to Las Vegas,” McCarty told The Drive Guys.

His optimism centered less around the A’s, more on expansion. “Sacramento is absolutely in the mix,” he said.

McCarty was told they’re looking for one West team and one East. Nashville is already largely considered the favorite for the East.

Meanwhile, Sacramento is in the mix along with Portland, Salt Lake City, and San Antonio, according to Mayor McCarty.

Proving their ability to sell sponsors within the stadium and city will be crucial, making the A’s attendance in the coming years impactful.

McCarty is willing to provide added support to the Athletics, but would hope for something in return.

“We’ll step up more and support you, (if you) maybe throw us a bone and call us the Sacramento A’s. Come on now, you play here.”

Sacramento is the largest U.S. city without two major professional sports teams, and they’re pushing to break that.

The Athletics have been playing their best baseball of the season over the past couple of weeks, and reinforcements are on the way.

All-Star shortstop Jacob Wilson, who has been sidelined with a left forearm fracture since July 25th, has played in three rehab games with the AAA Las Vegas Aviators, going three-for-11 with a home run in those appearances.

Wilson appears to be closing in on a return to an Athletics lineup that has powered its way to a record of 15-8 over the past 23 games.
